About

The longer story.

I’m Tomer. I co-founded Agora with Yishai, I’m writing a book called The Civic Gap, and I’ve spent years working on innovation in government. Here’s how it all started.

Right now

  • Revising the full draft of The Civic Gap
  • Getting Agora’s alpha in front of early testers
  • Looking for offices willing to be design partners

How Agora started

It began as an argument, not a company.

Slowly, a gap came into focus: between elections, citizens have few real ways to take part in the decisions made in their name.

1

At university: a mental challenge.

Yishai and I kept asking: if you take the problems of political science seriously, what would you build to solve them? Ideas came and went. We argued, asked questions and tested answers.

2

The years between: not yet.

The timing didn’t feel right, and we didn’t yet have the skills or the knowledge to build it. So we kept learning, took on new jobs, and watched the technology mature. The idea kept coming back.

3

Now: the timing is right.

Our conversations with officeholders, civic-tech veterans, startup accelerators and citizens taught us something more: it’s also necessary.

“Fixing democracy” is a phrase that promises nothing, so we don’t use it. We want to help improve it, by updating its software and its hardware.
